The origin of the name of Novosibirsk, Russia

The city of Novosibirsk was founded in 1893 on the Western Siberian plains, near the Ob River. Initially, it had a population of only 7,800 people and was officially designated as a city in 1904. The original name of the city referred to Tsar Nicholas II, as it was initially called Novonikolayevsk before being renamed to Novosibirsk.

In 2020, by decree of Vladimir Putin, then President of Russia, the city was awarded the honorary title of “Labor Capability”.
